BiblioPlan's fourth Year covers U.S. and World History, 1850-2000, with Missionary Highlights. Fourth Year students will cover:

Victorian England and the Crimean War
The secession of the American South and the U.S. Civil War
Reconstruction, Westward expansion, the Gilded Age and the Great Depression in America
The European powers' Scramble for Africa, Belgian King Leopold II's personal conquest of the Congo and South Africa's Boer War
German Kaiser Wilhelm II and Word War I
German Chancellor Adolf Hitler and World War II
Struggles against Communism in the Cold War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War
Many other topics from Russia, China, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Africa and elsewhere

Year Four students will begin with a look at the mighty British Empire during its golden age under Queen Victoria. They will watch Britain and France join forces with the tottering Ottoman Empire to thwart Russia's ambitions in the Crimean War. At the same time, they will see how conflicts over Slavery and States' Rights in the USA, which have been brewing since the nation's founding, finally boil over with the secession of the South and the terrible American Civil War.

Next, Year Four students will study the USA's Reconstruction era, Westward expansion on the pioneer trails and Indian wars in the West. They will see millions of immigrants from all over the world go to work in American factories. They will watch unfettered competition in the world of business and industry lead to the rise of extremely wealthy "robber barons" like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie. They will look on as America abandons its former isolation and becomes a world power in the Spanish-American War.

Back in Europe, Year Four students will watch the clever Prussian chancellor Otto van Bismarck maneuver to organize a chaotic and divided mass of German states into a strong and united German Empire. They will witness Bismarck's humiliation of France as Germany occupies Paris and crowns its first emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm I, in Sun King Louis XIV's extravagant Palace of Versailles. They will see the continued weakness of the Ottoman Empire lead to chaos in the Balkans and the fateful assassination of Austria's Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand. Then they will watch German Kaiser Wilhelm II, a friend of Ferdinand's, support a vengeful Austrian attack on the Balkan nation of Serbia, igniting a chain reaction that will explode into World War I.

After World War I, Year Four students will see different results in different places:

In America, far from the terrible battlefields of WWI, they will see prosperity-- until overexuberance leads to the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and America's longest economic depression.
In Russia, they will see conflicts before, during and after the war lead to the overthrow of the Tsars and the rise of Communism under Lenin and Stalin.
In Germany, they will see the harsh punishments imposed by the Treaty of Versailles leave the German people poor, angry and vulnerable to the nationalist, race-proud rantings of the Fascist Adolf Hitler.

Year Four students will watch a second German ruler lead the world into a second World War. They will look on as the free peoples of the world struggle to retain their freedom and very nearly lose. In the aftermath of World War II, they will watch a revitalized American economy strengthen a badly damaged Western Europe to protect it from the grasp of Communism. They will see Eastern Europe caught in that grasp and sealed behind the U.S.S.R.'s Iron Curtain. After Asia, too, becomes Communist, they will see America fight two wars in Korea and Vietnam, trying to prevent Communism's further spread.

Year Four students will also witness several other struggles:

The Jews' struggle to survive Hitler's Holocaust
The struggle to establish a Jewish homeland in Israel
The Cold War struggle and the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.
The struggle for Civil Rights in the U.S.
Struggles against terrorism in the Middle East and around the world

Most weeks also include Missionary Highlights, which are detailed and inspiring life summaries of church leaders and missionaries of the Gospel like:

BiblioPlan's third Year covers U.S. and World History, 1600-1850, with Missionary Highlights. Third Year students will cover:

New World colonists in Virginia, New England and New France
The American Revolution, America's Founding Fathers and the Constitution of the United States
France's aristocracy, the French Revolution and Napoleon
Britain's vast empire, its domination of India and its Opium Wars in China
America's Westward expansion, Manifest Destiny, the Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush
American folk heroes like Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Sam Houston and Kit Carson
Topics from Spain, Russia, China, Japan, Africa, Mexico, Haiti, South America and many other places

Year Three students will begin with a review of the vast, wealthy Spanish Empire, which began to crumble in the late 1500s. They will look on as explorers like Henry Hudson and Jacques Cartier search for the elusive Northwest Passage. They will keep one eye on settlers from England and France who are struggling to establish permanent New World colonies in Virginia, New England and New France. With the other eye, they will keep track of the conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Europe's Thirty Years' War. Along the way, they will get updates from faraway Russia, China, Japan, Africa, India and the Ottoman Empire.

Year Three students will watch France's Sun King, Louis XIV, elevate the French monarchy to the height of its power. They will see France and Britain clash over control of the New World, and look on as France aids Britain's thirteen New World colonies in their struggle for independence. They will watch those Thirteen Colonies win an unlikely victory in the American Revolution and go on to establish the new United States of America. They will study America's Founding Fathers, who based the new U.S. Constitution on lofty principles of liberty and equality. Then they will see the French Revolution nearly tear France apart, as its citizens overthrow their profligate monarchy to seek some of that equality for themselves.

Next, Year Three students will watch Napoleon raise France up from the ashes of that Revolution to create an empire that will threaten to dominate every other European nation. Then they will see Napoleon destroy himself with an overambitious campaign into frigid Russia, and watch one of the largest armies of all time retreat in ruin and disgrace. They will see the British Empire take France's place as the dominant European power. They will look on as Britain dominates India and launches the Opium Wars in China, all in the name of free commerce and balanced trade.

Meanwhile, in the New World, Year Three students will see the USA begin to explore and settle North America west of the Mississippi, while the nations of South America battle for independence and equality. They will watch Texas and the USA fight off Mexico for control of the American southwest. Their study will end with the prospectors of the 1849 California Gold Rush.

The New Worlds Explored unit of the Medieval Companion, Weeks 20 - 23, is now available on our store in eBook form only. Due to some changes in our scope, teachers should probably allow at least 5 weeks to cover these four chapters.
The fully revised, expanded and complete Modern Companion is now available at our store in one volume. For those who bought the Modern Companion, Volume 1 to use for this Fall, we are also offering Volume 2 to use for this coming Spring.
BiblioPlan is adding two new supplements: Cool History for Upper Middles and Hands-On Maps for Advanced. These new supplements are now available for the Ancients and Modern years. There will now be Cool History assignments for four different grade levels: Littles, Middles, Upper Middles and Advanced. BiblioPlan's second Year covers Medieval and Church History from the Fall of Rome to the Renaissance.
Second Year students will cover:

Church history from the persecution of the early church and the conversion of Emperor Constantine through the Protestant Reformation
European and Mediterranean World history including Knights and Feudalism, Christian France, the rise of Islam, Muslim Spain, Viking conquests, England's rulers and more
Topics from faraway China, Japan, Australia, India and Africa
Early explorers of the New World

Year Two students will watch the Christian church emerge from hiding to become a world power. They will see the rise of Christian France begin with the conversion of France's King Clovis. Then they will watch as the Islamic Empire rises up in a flash to take control of most of the Mediterranean world. They will see nearly all of Spain fall to Berber Muslims from Africa, known as the Moors. They will watch the Moors move on from Spain to threaten Christian France itself, until they are finally stopped by another French king, Charles Martel.

Year Two students will also follow the Viking Invasions of France and England and watch the Vikings gain a permanent foothold in Normandy. They will see these French-speaking Normans leap across the English Channel to conquer England. They will study every ruler of England from that first Norman king, William the Conqueror, to the thoroughly English Queen Elizabeth I. In following England's rulers, they will learn about milestone events such as the Crusades, the creation of the Magna Charta, the Black Death, the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of the Roses. Year Two ends with England's defeat of the powerful Spanish Armada in 1588, which signals the decline of the wealthy Spanish Empire and the rise of France and Britain.

Year Two students will also cover:

Rurik the Viking and the origins of Russia
Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire
Osman I and the Ottoman Empire
The Siege of Constantinople and the fall of the Byzantine Empire
New World explorers from Spain and Portugal
Topics from China, Japan, Australia, India, Africa and elsewhere

Later in the day, each child brings out his or her assigned library book: a work of historical fiction, non-fiction or biography, chosen from the BiblioPlan Guide, that goes along with this week’s history lessons. Before bedtime, Mom, Dad or even the oldest child brings out this month’s Family Read-Aloud selection from the Guide so that the entire family can focus on meaningful topics from the week’s lessons.

On the next day of history lessons, Mom moves to the next column on the BiblioPlan Guide page for the week. As she reads from the BiblioPlan Ancient History Companion, she notices connections between Bible history and secular Ancient history, and she helps her children understand these connections. In order to put today’s lessons in context, Mom prints a copy of this week’s BiblioPlan Map assignment sheet for each of her children. Her oldest child has a knack for geography, so she helps the younger children with their maps while Mom admires her gifts. When the maps are finished, the younger children spend some time cutting and pasting figures onto their BiblioPlan Timeline charts and working on their Giants of the Faith summaries from their BiblioPlan Cool History assignment sheets. The very youngest child colors a picture from the BiblioPlan Coloring Book. Meanwhile, the older children find a quiet spot and spend time reading the more advanced selections from the BiblioPlan Guide-- the BiblioPlan Ancient History Companion, Trial and Triumph, Famous Men of Greece or some other text. They find it satisfying to educate themselves on more complex topics that they think the little ones won’t understand. Later, though, when the little ones overhear them discussing their readings with Mom, they understand more than the older ones think!

On the third and last day of history lessons for the week, Mom looks once more at the BiblioPlan Guide that has laid out the week’s assigned readings so neatly and simply. She asks the youngest child to bring out the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History. Saving the snippet readings for later, she opens the encyclopedia to the two pages that will enhance the topic for the week, providing rich pictures and some Internet links to peruse. Today is also the day Mom has chosen to work on the activity she’s chosen from the BiblioPlan Craft Book to cement this week’s lesson in everyone’s mind: they’re building a miniature shaduf, an ancient irrigation device. Later, the oldest child gets some public speaking experience as she reads aloud for the younger children. The little ones can’t wait to see how the story comes out, and Mom can’t help but admire how far her oldest has progressed. She is grateful for the simplicity BiblioPlan brings to home schooling. Her different-aged children will always be on different levels in their studies of math and science, but with BiblioPlan, they can all study history, geography and literature together.

Using BiblioPlan with Your High School Student

BiblioPlan’s materials provide everything you need to guide your high school student through for-credit courses in all of these subjects:

Assigning Credit

English and American Literature: Five hours of work per week, per subject, over the course of an entire school year, constitutes one full credit. Choose the appropriate literature from the BiblioPlan Guide. For English Literature, choose British authors and assign reports and essays from the BiblioPlan Guide on their work. For American Literature, choose American authors and assign reports and essays from the BiblioPlan Guide on their work. For a regular English course, combine BiblioPlan literature selections with an outside grammar/writing program (BiblioPlan does not provide a grammar program).

World History and World Geography: One half credit per subject, per year. If you follow BiblioPlan through Years 1 and 2, you can credit your students with one full credit of World History and one full credit of World Geography. Alternatively, designate Year 1 as one full credit of World History and Geography, Part One; and designate Year 2 as one full credit of World History and Geography, Part Two.

US History and Modern History: One half credit per subject, per year. If you follow BiblioPlan through Years 3 and 4, you can credit your students with one full credit of US History and one full credit of Modern History. Alternatively, designate Year 3 as one full credit of US and Modern History, Part One; and designate Year 4 as one full credit of US and Modern History, Part Two.

US Government: One full credit in either Year 3 or Year 4.
